I was on LTD with Sunlife with a psychological injury in March 2021. I applied for WSIB in 2022 and my claim was accepted back to the start date of claim with Sunlife. WSIB paid back Sunlife the net amount I received from Sunlife. Sunlife insists they get the gross amount repaid. The difference is the taxes remitted to the CRA. They state it isn’t taxes despite the fact I’ve shown it to two different tax accountants and they can clearly see it’s taxes. I finally did get it in writing from Sunlife after I explained it to them that it’s taxes but now Sunlife says it isn’t. They cannot explain what the difference is between the net and the gross. I’m trying to get this sorted out with a tax accountant. The amount is substantial at $10,500. I wonder how many other claimants they have done this to and how many have just not done an investigation and they just repaid the difference between the gross and the net. To me this is acting in bad faith. They have been rude to me and say they will send it to collections and they say it’s going to ruin my credit rating etc. I tell them I can’t repay something I have not received! The money is with the CRA. Also now they are persistent in me applying for CPPD despite the fact I’m no longer receiving benefits from Sunlife but my employer says I’m on a waiver for life insurance. I’m still with WSIB. Also Sunlife has their case managers asking claimants Psychological questions. My Psychologist whom I have through WSIB, states that they are in no way qualified to ask these type of questions nor interpret my answers. Also Sunlife is insisting I apply for CPPD. I tell them I no longer receive benefits for my them. They tell me they will persist in me applying until I do. My WSIB case manager says this should be my choice … not Sunlife’s persistence. My Employer states that I’m responsible to obtain benefits from other sources . I’ve already done this with WSIB. This situation has caused me much undue stress and set back my therapy sessions since my sessions mainly involve the stress of paying back money I don’t have plus forcing me to apply for CPPD when I’m trying to get better. I feel like I’m being harassed by Sunlife and pulled in different directions all impeding my recovery. Also I will be 65 in 16 months so why do the additional process of applying for CPPD when it will very soon be rolling into regular CPP. I am beyond aggravated and frustrated.
