I seen my optometrist who suggested that I have a 'sleep assessment' done as sleep apnea was suspected - which could lead to heart problems and other issues. The referral was sent to my GP and although I agreed to it, I did not know it would lead me down a 'rabbit hole'. I had the 'at home' sleep study done, and now have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and the doctor verbally told me I am not allowed to drive because I have a risk of falling asleep - even though I told him I don't have any symptoms of daytime sleepiness. In fact, I had no symptoms what so ever. He said only the sleep specialist can 'sign me off' on my ability to drive again, but in the meantime, I'm having to wait for this appointment for months. I have been compliant with the cpap trial but the device is 'fighting' with me to breathe - which is why I am seeing the specialist - but also to hopefully get a driving clearance. The first appt with the sleep specialist is the 'interview' and the sleep study (in the lab) is not for several weeks afterwards. My question is about the driving - am I now suddenly considered 'disabled' and not allowed to drive! I was not issued anything in writing - only verbal directions from my GP to 'not drive', although it is likely reflected in his notes. So I suppose if I get into an accident (and not from sleeping at the wheel) while awaiting the sleep specialist appointment - and I was advised not to drive, ICBC could go into the GP notes and see. There is a grey area not covered - between diagnosis and proof of ability to drive. I have a clean driving record of many years and have no history of daytime sleepiness yet am banned from driving until I see my sleep specialist - many months in? Can you provide some clarity?
