Hello. I am currently on STD through insurance provided by my benefits. I have been in regular contact with the insurer, and forwarding the approvals from them to my employer. My employer has been demanding a doctor's note and the insurer has been informing them that all is approved. Her reaction is similar to mine, which is privacy.
I need to know if I am obliged to provided medical information to my employer given that I am being paid by the insurer? (or will a note from the doc with non-medical details be sufficient and required?)
My concerns are the costs of asking for a note from the doc (not to mention how busy they are) and the appropriateness of having this personal medical information on a file which will not be used by a medical professional. It might also be relevant for you to know that I have been in contact with my supervisor weekly, and he gets many TMI conversations. :)

Generally, your employer has the right to request a doctors note while you're on leave, and it should be provided to ensure communication with the employer. However, most importantly, they don't have the right to the particulars as to your medical condition/reason you're on leave etc. Non-medical details regarding any potential return to work date is generally enough but I recommend reading more about this here: https://stlawyers.ca/disability-law/faq/communicating-employer-on-ltd/#contact
