Hello,

My LTD started in October 2020 for chronic anxiety and depression. Prior to that I was on STD. I am on prescribed medication, continue to attend therapy sessions, and have had several sessions with psychiatrists.

I turn 65 in February 2024 and I received a letter from my healthcare provider that my LTD ends the day before my birthday. They will continue paying my monthly LTD payments until that date. After that, I will not have any income.

I wanted to understand where I stand from an employment and health coverage perspective. I believe I am still an employee of the organization that I work for and my healthcare coverage ends when I reach age 65. There is an option to privately pay for continued coverage. My spouse retired earlier this year so we will have no coverage after this date. I am not ready to return to work due to my illness and I am not ready to retire due to outstanding financial commitments.

Could you please explain to me what my options are.

Thank you.

Thanks for your question. Most insurance policies do state that LTD benefits end at 65, in which case we are unable to challenge such. You will need to speak with our employment team, however, to discuss your rights and options as it relates to your employment when you turn 65. I recommend contacting our employment lawyers at 1-855-821-5900 to discuss further.
