I recieved the following letter (I only had room to paste part of the letter) I am wondering if this is something I should further investigate or is it my legal requirement or best practice? ... We would like to provide you with information about the advantages and processes related to applying for CPP (Canada Pension Plan) benefits and how it may impact your monthly benefits from Manulife. Advantages for Applying to CPP: CPP considers the time CPP Disability benefits were received when calculating the CPP Retirement benefit. This ensures that you are not penalized for the time you are not working and not contributing to CPP, potentially resulting in higher CPP Retirement benefits at age 65 if you received CPP Disability benefits before that age. CPP provides a cost-of-living allowance (COLA) each January, leading to an annual increase in the CPP benefit based on the COLA. Additional CPP benefits may be available if you have dependents under 18. Specific forms related to this benefit will be sent to you, requiring the dates of birth of each dependent. Application Process: CPP benefit claims are processed by Service Canada and may take 6 months or longer to render a decision. Manulife will continue to pay disability benefits as usual while you wait for the decision on CPP disability benefits. How CPP benefits impact your monthly benefit from Manulife: There is no impact to your Manulife disability claim if your CPP claim is declined. However, when approved, the CPP benefit will impact your Manulife payment. If approved, CPP benefits are paid monthly. We deduct the CPP/QPP benefit amount dollar for dollar from the LTD benefit. The Manulife monthly benefit is reduced so our payment PLUS the CPP payment is equal to what you received from Manulife prior to CPP approval. CPP Benefits are taxable, therefore the total monthly amount received from CPP and LTD may be slightly lower because of the tax deducted from CPP, However, when you do your tax return, you may get the amount taxed from CPP refunded. CPP may determine that you are entitled to benefits before you applied, resulting in a potential retroactive approval and lump sum payment. It's important to notify Manulife immediately about any retroactive payments received from CPP. How CPP Dependent benefits impact your monthly benefit from Manulife: Your group policy allows you to receive up to 85% of your net pre-disability earnings from all sources of income while you receive LTD benefits. In your case, the amount is $4553.41. This is the All-Source Maximum and is considered when you receive benefits from other sources. Any amount over this maximum percent (ASM) is reduced from the benefit we pay

Typically, most insurance policies do have the right to request that you apply for CPP Disability. If you're wary of doing so, you can ask your case manager to show you where in your policy it states youre required to do so.
