I have been off work for 3 years due to a medical diagnosis and treatment. I had STD for 6 months and have been on LTD since then. I qualified for the "change in definition" at the 2 year mark. My insurance company recently asked me to apply for CPP benefits and told me I have 3 weeks to apply. My doctor has told me that she does not believe I will qualify for CPP, but that I should continue to qualify for LTD regardless of the response about CPP benefits. My health is slowly improving and I am hopeful to be able to return to work in the next 6-12 months. My question is about what information is shared between the government and the insurance company if I am denied CPP disability? Is the insurance company provided with the reason for denial by the government? What financial information could be shared between the government and the insurance company, i.e. my tax return info, my spouse's tax return info, etc? I feel this is private information and I am not comfortable with that being shared with the insurance company in case it impacts my family. Should I go ahead and apply for the CPP disability at the request of my insurance company? Thank you.
Thanks for your question. Generally, it is in your best interest to proceed with the CPPD application once the insurer has requested such. If you refuse, the insurer may have the right to reduce your monthly benefit amount by what they think CPPD would pay you. If you are denied, you may need to provide that letter to the insurance company, however they generally don't provide additional information outside of the CPPD approval/denial details, especially if it relates to your spouses information. If you are denied, we may be able to help!
