My employer started to pay me regular pays while I was already receiving group LTD benefits from Manulife. This started 2 months after I was approved for LTD. Manulife has stopped my payments, citing an overpayment. There is no reason for my employer to pay me while I am on LTD. I have now missed 2 LTD payments. I sent an email to my employer stating that I will pay back the money they deposited into my account so I can start receiving my LTD benefits again. Manulife is waiting for the employer to confirm before they will resume my payments. I believe this is a payroll error and the employer is not admitting to the error and instead is claiming that they topped up my LTD to 100 percent using my vacation credits, and that Manulife should have paid them (the employer) instead of me. But that is not the process with LTD. Manulife won’t listen to me and said I have to work this out with my employer. What are my options to get this figured out?
You're right that generally, while on LTD, your employer wouldn't continue to pay you. You're also correct that your insurer likely wouldn't be in a situation where they pay your employer (instead of you). It sounds like you're doing what you can to try to rectify this, but I recommend giving us a call to discuss further. Our contact number is below.
