My employer changed its group LTD insurer from Insurer A to Insurer B on January 1, 2026. I was actively working when the change occurred, but in June 2026, I suddenly became unable to work. The new policy has a 12-month pre-existing condition exclusion (with 3-month look-back), and I had related medical treatment prior to the insurer change.

Does BC law or the insurance policy/ies typically provide continuity of LTD coverage in this situation, thereby making the pre-existing condition exclusion not apply to me in the usual way? If so, which insurer would be responsible for a disability that occurs shortly after the change of insurers?

If there’s no such continuity-of-coverage protection, if I return to work (full or part-time), and later become disabled again from the same condition(s), would the pre-existing condition exclusion still apply? Or could returning to work for a period of time change the analysis?
Thank you!
