I am currently on LTD for anxiety and mental health, never had any issues work-related or otherwise with alcohol. But during my process, I had to see a substance abuse doctor the treatment plan came back with me having to go to rehab for two months as well as requirements as attend meetings and be part of my plan. I've been sober a year and drinking was never the issue, never had any issues, documented or otherwise, at work or in my personal life. It also took over a year to finally see a mental health doctor for a consultation. I am tending to go back to work in the summer as I finally got the help I needed and was seeking. But have been told even if I get reevaluated by a doctor who says the monitoring isn't needed that I wouldn't be able to return to my job. I also tried to appeal the initial plan and didn't receive payments during this time for 3 months. The insurance company is CanadaLife, my employer is PHSA and I am part of a union, HEU and they haven't been able to assist me in dealing with the misdiagnosis, once that was made it has been the primary catalyst and prevented me from receiving the treatment I needed until recently.
I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you're having. Unfortunately, you will need to speak with your union representatives about this. It is generally your employers obligation to bring you back to work. If they're refusing, it needs to be handled by your union as external lawyers do not have the jurisdiction to be able to assist.
