I’ve been on LTD for 6 years. I had stage 3 breast cancer and now i suffer from depression and anxiety. I also suffer from neuropathy in my fingers and toes and my legs hurt since chemo. I’ve had over 8 people pass away in less than 2 years including my father and his sister. Both my family doctor and my psychiatrist said it was good for me to get away and take a trip. I want to know if this will affect my LTD and do I have to tell them I’m going away. It doesn’t say anything about vacations in the RBC handbook.
I'm so sorry to hear what you've been going through.
Unfortunately, I can’t answer this without seeing your policy first (not the benefit booklet or summary). Every STD/LTD policy is different. Some contain travel restriction terms (which are sometimes called other things), and some don’t. If they do contain such terms, the restrictions can vary rather significantly. Sometimes you wouldn't be able to leave the country (or the province), without the insurer’s permission, at all, or for more than 2 weeks, or for more than 3 months, or for more than 6 months, and so on.
I recommend asking your insurer for a copy of your LTD policy to review further. You can also contact our disability specialist, Rebecca, at rebecca.stap@stlawyers.ca, and she can review it with you as well, at no charge
