Ask your question and a Long-term Disability Lawyer in Canada will answer in minutes
I'm currently on LTD for the past 4 years due to mental health. My mother leaves abroad and she is about to turn 80 years old with health conditions which do not allow her to travel. I would like to see her this year over the Holidays and spend 1 month with her and relatives. My insurance policy does not have any restrictions towards travel, except informing them about it. I was in Brazil in 2022 for 3 weeks and I let them know it.
Is there a chance they will use this to cut me off?
The technical answer is that if your LTD policy does not restrict travel outside the country then you should not be cut off as a result of your travel to see your mother. The practical answer is that insurers sometimes start "digging" into a file when they see a claimant travelling outside the country in order to determine if they are not as disabled as they purport to be. In other words, you need to be mindful of the "optics" (to the insurer) of you travelling. If your policy doesn't prohibit travel outside the country then from a technical standpoint they aren't able to cut off your benefits simply because you have travelled. But again, the question is whether this will raise what they consider to be a "red flag". It shouldn't, given what you've written, and the fact that you've been on LTD for the past 4 years (which means that you're in the "any occupation" stage of the policy), but insurers often, in my experience, do not act correctly in such circumstances.
