Add Comment Question: I am in receipt of LTD benefits from RBC and I recently completed an update form that included a very broad authorization allowing RBC to collect pretty much any type of information. I was not comfortable signing the authorization, so I advised RBC I would not sign it and I revoked the previous authorizations I had signed but I also stated that I would sign authorization to allow them to obtain information from third parties on a case-by-case basis. They have now requested that I obtain records myself from at least 5 different doctors. They have given me two and a half weeks to provide these records to them. I feel that I do not have the capacity to take this on (given the limitation of my disability) and also that the time frame is completely unrealistic. Am I obligated to collect these records for RBC or can I tell them that I am not able to do so and I will sign the authorizations they need to collect them themselves? Answer: RBC is entitled to relevant medical documentation regarding your disability and condition so you will need to produce those if you want them to pay you the benefits under your policy. If you feel that you are unable to get those records, you can certainly give them authorization to get them on your behalf. If you have any difficulties with RBC in this regard, or if they threaten to not pay you despite you offering them the authorization to get those documents, let us know ASAP and we will help.
