Add Comment Question: I have been on on leave from work since May 2023 and long term kicked in nov 2023- I was just told I have to apply for CPPD but not sure if I have to and will this impact my job security? If and when able can I return to my job ? No one is providing me with job security questions. Also, whatever amount CPPD approves will be deducted by insurance? But CPpD is taxable so I will be making less if I apply Answer: Typically, the insurer would be allowed to request that you apply for CPPD. If you do not, they may be able to deduct what they THINK CPPD would pay, and reduce your LTD benefit by that amount. You can read more about this here: https://stlawyers.ca/law-essentials/canada-pension-plan-disability/ In terms of the taxes, you are correct that CPPD is taxable. To help offset this, you can apply for the Disability Tax Credit as well. With this benefit, you may be eligible for up to 10 years of retroactive benefits. We don't deal with the DTC here, but recommend contacting True North Disability. You can do this directly through https://bit.ly/4jz8UBx Finally, regarding job security, this typically wouldn't impact anything. If you recover from your disabling condition, you would just inform CPPD and return to work. These benefits don't necessarily mean that you're disabled forever, just experiencing a prolonged and severe condition. However, of note, your employer technically can end your employment at any time. If they do so due to your disability, however, you may have a human rights or wrongful dismissal claim against them.
