Add Comment Question: My LTD claim with Canada Life for disability benefits had been accepted beyond the 24-month decision point of July 10, 2026, to support the gradual return to work recommended by my provider and was extended to Aug 23, 2026. Unfortunately, my work stated that they could not accommodate the restrictions and limitations. Canda Life states beginning July 10, 2026, the definition of disability changes and I am considered disabled if, disease or injury prevents you from being gainfully employed. Gainful employment means work: 1. you are medically able to do, 2. for which you have at least the minimum qualifications, 3. that provides income of at least 50% of your pre-disability monthly earnings; and 4. that exists either in the province or territory where you worked when the disability started or where you currently live. Your plan does not consider your location in the province or if work is available. I am currently being treated for Circadian Rhythm Disruption and the gradual back to work plan entails a very gradual increase of work hours (4 hours starting at 1pm-5pm) (My regular work hours are 8am-4:30pm ) over a 12 week period. There would be monthly checks with the sleep clinic and main provider, noting it may take longer than 12 weeks to have my sleep adjust so that I can get to work for 8 am. I had notified Canada Life of intent to appeal before the cutoff date but would like to know if there is actually a chance to extend the claim (while I am still in treatment to extend my working hours), what are the chances of winning an appeal for my situation? Answer: Typically, appeals are not successful as they are essentially asking the same people to review the same sort of evidence, so the results dont often change. That said, you should not be cut off before you're cleared and ready to work. Please give us a call at the number below so we can discuss your options and see how we can help.
