I have been receiving LTD benefits through a group policy for 3 years. The insurer requested that I apply for CPPD which I did, was denied, requested reconsideration and was denied again. I asked my insurer if they would like me to appeal to the SST and their response was that it was my choice. Since any CPPD payment would benefit the insurer, not me, should I appeal? What does this mean for continuing LTD payments? I am 61.

It's entirely your call whether you choose to appeal. A benefit to doing so would be that if your LTD benefits are cut off down the road, you still have CPPD income. However, it may be helpful to speak with our CPP specialist, Brandon, to get a bit more information regarding what that process will look like. If you have questions or want further assistance, you can connect with him here: brandon.ferrante@stlawyers.ca

In terms of your LTD benefits, they should continue as long as you meet your LTD policy definition of total disability - the CPPD denials should not stop your benefits. If they do, or your insurer gives you a hard time, please contact us ASAP.
